1 NOTE Marshal Thomas A. Brummette
1 NOTE Thomas A. Brummette served as Marshal of Oliver Springs several different times
2 CONT His longest service of record was from March of 1914 until November of 1916, bu
2 CONT he also served one short period as late as June of 1917. A glance at the Court
2 CONT Docket for this period reveals at least two significant facts. First, judging
2 CONT from the number of arrests, Tom was one of the most active Marshals in the
2 CONT town's history. Secondly, Tom Brummette showed no favors because he arrested th
2 CONT high, the low , and the mean, consistent with his line of duty. Some of those
2 CONT arrested later became Mayors of the Town. Doctors were listed among those
2 CONT arrested. Tom was evidently fearless because among his arrests were men known t
2 CONT be tough for police officers to handle, including: Shirley Pass, Tom Vance, Bus
2 CONT Lynch, Bob Martin, Albert Edwards, Bill Riggs, Hood Liles, Chester Nolin, Nick
2 CONT Seibers, John Simpson, Dutch Hall, Hurley Foster, and others. Of course, Tom wa
2 CONT serving while Squire Cox was City Judge, and no doubt Squire encouraged the
2 CONT enforcement of the law.
1 NOTE Strongly-Built Man
1 NOTE Tom Brummette was a powerful, stockily built man who could physically over-powe
2 CONT an offender without resorting to billy sticks or a gun. Tom was a likable
2 CONT fellow, but he had a little mean streak in him which in his younger years ran
2 CONT him afoul of the law and Squire Cox's Court, but this knowledge of the other
2 CONT side of the law served him well in apprehending criminals when he was Marshal.
1 NOTE The Thomas Brummette Family
1 NOTE The ancestry of Thomas A. Brummette may be of considerable interest to many
2 CONT people in the Roane area because of many intermarriages with other large
2 CONT families many of whom still reside in the area.
1 NOTE The known Brummette family line begins with Revolutionary War Soldier, Thomas
2 CONT Brummette who was evidently born in VA in 1754 and died in Anderson County
2 CONT November 11, 1842. He served in the Tenth Virginia Regiment and fought in the
2 CONT Battles of Brandywine, Guilford Courthouse, etc. He received a pension October
2 CONT 17, 1818. Thomas married Mary Burris.

1 NOTE Reverend William R. Brummette was born March 23, 1844 in the present Marlow
2 CONT community. He served in the Civil War. Bill Brummette was a well-known Baptist
2 CONT preacher, and was the pastor of many local churches including Beach Park which
2 CONT he helped to found. Reverend Brummette married first, Sarah E. Ketchum (buried
2 CONT in Russell Cemetery at Scandlyn). He married, secondly, Mary Lula Arp
2 CONT (1874-1955) who is buried in the Oliver Springs Cemetery.

1 NOTE James A. Brummette was born in Anderson County, July 31, 1812 (census shows
2 CONT 1816). He married Serelda Brown (b. about 1813). James A. was a Baptist preache
2 CONT and lived in the area now known as Marlow. He was killed near the end of the
2 CONT Civil War. Jasper Smith wrote, "Uncle Jim Brummette while sitting in his home
2 CONT feeding a child on his lap an unknown man entered the room, poked a pistol in
2 CONT his side and shot him dead. He was buried in the Walker Long Cemetery in Dutch
2 CONT Valley." Reverend James A. Brummette and Serelda Brown Brummette had at least
2 CONT ten children

1 NOTE BIOG: Bobbie Jean CRASS was born December 30, 1930, in the northern part of
2 CONT Roane County near Oliver Springs. Her ancestors had lived in the area for
2 CONT several generations and were among the earliest settlers there. Her father was
2 CONT Elmer Crass and her mother was Lola Davis. She had three brothers and three
2 CONT sisters -- Elmer, Jr., Imogene, Betty, Dean, Benny, and Vicki.
1 NOTE Bobbie attended Oliver Springs schools until 1942, when she and her family move
2 CONT to Harriman. She attended Harriman schools and graduated with the class of 1948
2 CONT She was perhaps the youngest member of the class and, being a very petite 5 fee
2 CONT tall, was among the smallest in size. Yet she had a forceful personality and
2 CONT wit, so was also among the most popular.
1 NOTE On April 13, 1951, Bobbie married Charles Massey (Class of '47) and they lived
2 CONT in Knoxville until he graduated from the University of Tennessee in June. They
2 CONT moved back to Harriman where Bobbie was employed at Empire Millwork Corp.
2 CONT Following his induction into the Air Force, Bobbie lived and worked in Denver,
2 CONT Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico, where her first child, Susan, was born on
2 CONT November 2, 1953. At that time, Bobbie abandoned any thoughts of a career of he
2 CONT own and devoted her life to the proper raising of her children.
1 NOTE In May 1954, Bobbie and her infant child flew to France to join Charles who had
2 CONT been transferred to Chateauroux Air Force Base. They lived in the remote villag
2 CONT of Jeu Maloches for a year, then returned to Knoxville where Charles entered th
2 CONT UT graduate school when his air force tour was completed. In December 1956, the
2 CONT moved to Chattanooga and on March 6, 1957, Bobbie gave birth to her second
2 CONT child, Carol.
1 NOTE For the next 13 years, Bobbie spent her considerable energy and intellect on
2 CONT raising her children and in managing their home. During this time she was activ
2 CONT in the PTA, Christian Women's Fellowship, and numerous other social, school, an
2 CONT church activities. As her children approached adulthood, she began a career wit
2 CONT the Hamilton County Headstart program, working with poverty stricken families i
2 CONT rural areas in the northern part of the county.
1 NOTE By March 1982, each of her two girls had finished college, married, and produce
2 CONT a grandchild. While on a business trip to Washington, D.C., she experienced a
2 CONT distressful stomach ailment. Upon returning to Chattanooga, a medical
2 CONT examination revealed a malignant tumor in her colon. It was immediately removed
2 CONT The surgery was unnecessarily traumatic and life threatening but she was
2 CONT pronounced free of cancer. This proved not to be the case, however, so over the
2 CONT next 21 months she endured two additional operations and treatment with both
2 CONT chemotherapy and radiation, but nothing could be devised to stop the disease
2 CONT from spreading to her vital organs. She died on December 15, 1983, just 15 days
2 CONT short of her 53rd birthday.
1 NOTE During her illness, Bobbie exhibited a remarkable courage, strength of
2 CONT character, and an unshakable Christian faith. She never complained, never felt
2 CONT sorry for herself, and never gave up hope. And even on her deathbed, she
2 CONT retained the radiance, vitality, and beauty of her youth. She now has five
2 CONT grandchildren who, fortunately, have inherited much of her unquenchable
2 CONT personality and spirit.
